Cosby to Host Sexual Assault Seminar

Cosby to Host Sexual Assault Seminar

Bill Cosby wants to host sexual assault seminars & NO one wants to hear it.

I don’t know what gets me more mad: Folks who voted for Trump or folks who really believe Bill Cosby is innocent. But before I dive into that, let me update you on one of the oddest twists from Bill Cosby’s sexual assault trial.  Last week, Cosby’s spokesperson announced that the comedian “wants to get back to work” by hosting a series of seminars about sexual assault.

I’ll give you a few seconds to let that process....

Bill Cosby avoided a guilty verdict last week, on charges that he drugged and molested a woman, in a case that ended in a mistrial. Nearly 60 other women have publicly accused Cosby of sexual assault over several decades. Thirty-five of those women shared their devastating stories with New York magazine in 2015.

But only Andrea Constand’s allegations led to criminal charges, due to the statute of limitations. But what’s even more upsetting about the allegations themselves, is the fact that Cosby is straight up thinking of hosting an education tour on sexual assault.

How is this real?

We’re now planning town halls and we’re going to be coming to [Birmingham] sometime in July …  to talk to young people because this is bigger than Bill Cosby,” Andrew Watt, a spokesman for Cosby said during an appearance on Good Day Alabama.

“Law are changing. The statute of limitations for victims of sexual assault are being extended,” Cosby’s other spokesperson Ebonee Beson said. “This is why people need to be educated. A brush against the shoulder, anything at this point, can be considered sexual assault and it’s a good thing to be educated about the laws.”

While I do believe that young people should be educated on sexual assault, I think it’s ludicrous for someone like Bill Cosby to be the one doing it. The reasons should be hella obvious but if they’re not, I’m more than willing to break them down for you.

No one is interested in what Cosby has to say about sexual assault. This is a man who was facing three counts of aggravated indecent assault from allegations that he drugged and sexually assaulted a woman. Andrea Constand to be exact. This is a man who has been accused by 60 plus other women for very similar sexual assault charges. This is a man who admitted back in 2005, that he was getting prescription Quaaludes and giving them to women he wanted to have sex with. I repeat, he actually admitted this and under oath.

Despite the dozens of accusations, Cosby has shown no remorse and has faced no real consequences aside from the actual accusations themselves. Teen Vogue’s Jake New said it best. “In other words, it’s possible that those who have committed gender violence or supported it can one day be in a position to help in prevention efforts. But such transformations require – at the very least – significant time and genuine displays of remorse.” We have seen none of that from Cosby.

A new statement from Cosby’s publicist proves that the motive behind these sexual assault seminars isn’t about prevention efforts either. It’s exactly what I had anticipated they were really about – protecting Cosby’s image.

Elbonee Benson told CNN’s “New Day Weekend,” that the upcoming speaking circuit is a “restoration of legacy” despite the fact that this totally contradicts what they were saying a few days ago.

“I just want to be clear: The town-hall meetings are not about sexual assault,” Benson said. “I repeat, these town-hall meetings are not about sexual assault. When we initially talked about the town-hall meetings, it was about restoration of legacy – much to what Mrs. Cosby spoke on in her statement is the sensationalism brought on by the media. This is another example of that.”

Of course, Cosby’s seminars are focused on himself and not on how to prevent sexual assault. Are we really surprised by this? I’ll tell you one thing, that tour of his is probably never going to happen because no one -- I repeat -- no one wants to hear what Cosby has to say about sexual violence. Period.
