No Spend November
Hi, my name is Kayla and I am a shopaholic. I blindly spend my paychecks, leaving me with little to no savings at the end of the month. So, when I started reading about 'No Spend November' I decided to jump on board with a month of detoxing from shopping.
First thing’s first. You should not use rules that someone else has set because for some lifestyles, certain expenditures are unavoidable. For example, I have read some articles saying to unsubscribe from sales emails; but we work in the fashion industry, so a majority of our work involves trend research. Instead of being able to remove the temptation, I am just going to have to use plain, ole’ self control.
Here are the rules I have set:
- Buy only the essentials.
- Commit to a free outdoor activity twice a week, like hiking.
- Instead of renting movies and buying books - go to the library.
- If I meet up with a friend, limit myself to one drink
- Instead of going out, invite friends over for a movie night, game night, or even just a girls’ night, and have everyone bring something (food/drinks).
- Here is my biggest rule - DO NOT USE MY CREDIT CARD TO PAY FOR ANYTHING.
My biggest weakness is charging up my credit card like it’s free money, then forgetting how much I spent on it during the month - so that is definitely off limits. My ‘essentials’ are public transportation, groceries, and all the rest of my bills. A free outdoor activity might sound restricting, but living in Seattle, there are a lot of beautiful hiking trails I have yet to discover. There is a site I use (http://www.onlyinyourstate.com/ ) to find and plan free activities. They have a page dedicated to each state!
If you are someone who lives for that latte before work in the morning, relax, you don’t have to go cold turkey. This challenge is about finding where you limits are, doing it the best you can this year, realizing where you could cut back more- and doing it again the next year even better. It’s like a detox! Whether you go cold turkey on spending, or cut out a little at a time- if you end the month with $100 more than you usually, I think we can call that a win.
If you are joining in, we would LOVE to here all of the individual stories that come out of this challenge. Post your rules and progress using the hashtag, #NSNcnnekt or in the comment section below. One lucky winner will be chosen to not only be featured in the recap, but win a $100 to reward yourself in December for your honest efforts!
PS: Co-founder Chary will be trying it, too! Playing by her rules (;
